ATTILIO:
Our guest today relocated from Southern California to Oahu in 2019 but also was born and grew up on Maui. He received his degree in finance and psychology from Colorado State University, and his doctor of chiropractic from Southern California University of Health Sciences
ADRIENNE:
He utilizes diversified technique in his chiropractic approach and has extensive experience in pediatrics, pregnancy, Myo fascial, fascial release and sports related injuries. Please welcome our guest, Dr. Scott Dean.
ATTILIO:
Hi, Dr.
ADRIENNE:
Dr.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Hello. Nice to be on.
ATTILIO:
Well, we first we got to start off with how do you say that word? Myofascial facial, myofascial?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Myofascial fascial Okay, right. Yeah, that was a facial with mail. No, no. Okay.
ATTILIO:
All right. So we wanted to introduce you to our guests, you know, and go a little bit deeper have them get to know you. So tell us a little bit more about how you got into this field and,
ADRIENNE:
and your journey. Yes. Looks like you’ve started here in Hawaii, like laughed, and you’ve made it back?
ATTILIO:
What brought you back?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
That’s right. So yeah, I was born in Maui grew up in Kihei. My dad was a pharmacist for Long’s drug. And we spent a number of years here and he eventually relocated to the mainland for a few years. So I kind of consider Hawaii and Colorado my home. But spent a lot of time in Colorado and made it out to California after I received my degrees in finance. In psychology, I kind of wanted to meld the two together and get into into some behavioral investing and market ideology. I ended up in kind of the bond market out in, in Los Angeles. And it was it was pretty stressful. And I was not not in the greatest of health during that time. It was a very high stress job. So I started kind of thinking about changing careers. And I met my now wife, who was going into chiropractic college at the time. And she was coming home and telling me and teaching me some of the things that she was learning. I found it super fascinating. And I decided to jump ship and become a chiropractor, best decision I ever made. So after graduating, and we practiced in Los Angeles for a little while we looked for a change, we had our son, and I didn’t want to raise him in that environment. So I decided to make it back to Hawaii and an opportunity presented itself in 2019. And so I moved out here with my wife and my son, and we’ve been practicing at Turning Point chiropractic ever since.
ATTILIO:
Nice.
ADRIENNE:
I’m glad that you’re able to boomerang back. Yeah.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Yes.
ATTILIO:
Boomerang back to Hawaii. So the some personal testimonials that, you know, have Adrian share, and then I’ll share is that we had somebody this is we obviously pre COVID Somebody come out to the office through lunch and learn and talk to us about all the benefits. And then we like spinal health, mental health educate us. So we said, Yeah, let’s go check it out. And then we’ve been clients ever since
ADRIENNE:
even through the pandemic, you guys were open and adjusting patient,
ATTILIO:
You know what I here’s what I would say, here’s the difference between a client and a patient. And you can Dr. Scott, you can totally rip this off. But a client is somebody that’s going to for preventative health. And a patient is going to, you know, to treat something that’s acute in their life. And so I like to say we’re clients, because I was like, Sure, you know, because one of the things that people think about I always thought about it because aging was always been going to let her tell her story been going through a long time. But I always thought that people will go to the chiropractor who people just got, you know, rear ended on the freeway.
ADRIENNE:
And that is one reason is one reason, but I thought that was the only reason. Many, many reasons why.
ATTILIO:
But I’ve been happy to say that I’ve been going for preventative health, spinal health and I’m pretty active for my age. And that’s that’s just part of the routine of my life of of healthcare. Yep.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Yeah, yeah.
ADRIENNE:
So yeah, I’ve been going to chiropractors my whole life pretty much because I was a high level gymnast landing on my head and having all sorts of fun injuries. And so chiropractic care was very important to me as an athlete’s. And I’ve gone for, you know, being in accidents. And then, you know, now, Dr. Scott and his team and I’ve actually even been adjusted by your wife in an emergency situation. And it’s just, you know, it’s been wonderful, and I feel great. He’s sure that I’m visiting you guys on a monthly basis.
ATTILIO:
So yeah, tell us more.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Absolutely. So yeah, difference between client and patient. I think even if it is kind of a non acute situation and preventative measure, we still refer to them as patients just because we’re treating him in a medical capacity. And we have to be aware of kind of other medical and health related issues that could affect kind of the the adjustment process there too. So yeah, we we, we refer to him as patients.
ATTILIO:
And you guys are very patient.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
You have to have patience to get patients. Yeah.
ATTILIO:
But you guys are I just don’t want that in there. You know, super busy and you guys are pretty quick. It’s not like sitting around for 45 minutes for five minute appointment, like, like you’re in. Yeah, you’re in your person, and you don’t have time for health, they have time for you, because they’ll get you in and out. But you were sharing some of the things.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Oh, yeah, no. So the, you know, it’s it is true that we are a kind of a point of contact for a lot of accident related injuries, car accidents, sports related accidents, you kind of see it all. Primarily, it’s a good mix between everything. The daily, the daily kind of toll the wear and tear that you can experience through your daily life just through work through driving, playing with your kids, you know, going out surfing, going to the beach, all of that kind of stuff can wear your body down a little bit and start to prevent motion and start to irritate the body in the spine. And so we see, you know, people that are in perfectly good health coming in for that preventative, and that maintenance style of adjustment, and we see those acute injuries that can be pretty serious. So everywhere in between, yeah.
ADRIENNE:
Attilio threw his back out the other day brushing his teeth.
ATTILIO:
Yeah. Electric those electric toothbrushes, the oral b1, holder heavy, no, gone into see doctors just bending over and then and it. I mean, it was like, you know, and you feel that and stuff? And no, I think I had a adjustment shortly thereafter. But I I like when you ask it any problem areas, and most of the time, there’s nothing you know, it’s always just stuff from working out. But tell talk describe to the listener, what does that initial? What does that initial assessment look like when someone comes to visit?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Absolutely, I like to say life is a full contact sport. And, you know, it can be putting on your shoes, it can be brushing your teeth, it can be doing the dishes, doing the laundry, all those types of things, sometimes we forget about the toll that it takes on our bodies. So when a patient presents and comes in, you have to kind of do your due diligence and, and get a snapshot of what brought them to this point where you get an idea of their history, their health. And then you establish a baseline range of motion, you do some tests, which you know requires pushing on parts of the body that may or may not produce pain, it gives us chiropractors a better idea of what potentially could be going on in that area. Some chiropractors do X rays turning point does not. But as long as there’s some sort of physical assessment portion, that tells us you know, what the potential diagnosis is, and an appropriate treatment plan to get that patient back to living their life to their fullest capacity.
ADRIENNE:
So I just I want to say that you guys work very well with other, you know, medical support. Right? So I had a complaint about my hip. And of course, you know, there’s, there’s only like a limited amount of things that can be done through the chiropractic care. And your Doctor Scott said, hey, you need to make an appointment with your physical therapists. And you know, having like, both of those treatments, I think, is what’s going to get me back to being 100%. Yeah. So thank you, thank you for
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Oh, of course, I, I you know, previous previously in Southern California, I worked in an integrative medicine environment. So it would be a situation where a person’s health is not just one thing. It’s not just the Orthopedic Specialists, it’s not the neurologist. It’s kind of a lot of different things that if you take a holistic approach to health, I think that’s kind of the switch and the trend that we’re seeing in overall health care. It takes a team effort to get somebody’s health in order. And there it is true. Chiropractic has a very broad scope, and we can help with a lot of things but there are certain things that need to be addressed. And there are appropriate places that patients need to go so we like to educate and make sure that they’re going to the places the correct places that they need to get that fixed.
ATTILIO:
Speaking of going to places remember we’ve we’ve been with you guys so long that you guys are on the second floor on that building behind the Burger King and have a beach and we’d have to go pass all those sometimes noisy teens in the stairwell and then you guys move downstairs to the SIBO place so that was cool because then we can get on a SIBO afterwards and then you guys move to even bigger a nicer place across the street by the like, like the Thai food and, and over there and subway and, and office, nice office but lots of parkings here stayed with you guys through that. And it’s been a great thing for our personal health. We’re always recommending you guys all the time, Adrian Yetta.
ADRIENNE:
Well, I mean, you’re, you’re speaking of their movement, your growth and ever beach. Dr. Scott, can you share with our listeners, all the different locations that you know that people can go and visit
ATTILIO:
for hundreds of 1000s of listeners that live everywhere on a wall over?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
That’s right. Well, yeah, we, we have had the opportunity ever since I’ve started with turning point, I think we had three offices when I first got there Ewa Beach was kind of our, our busiest office. And so that’s the reason that we’ve had to continue to expand, we’ve had more patients and more doctors come through. And so we needed a space to kind of adjust and treat all the people in our community. So we’ve been expanding that ever beach location. And you’re right, I think we’ve we’ve done a good job in the current spot that we’re in. But we also have six locations in total. Now we have one in Holly Eva, we’ve got one in YPO. One, and I want to kind of key one in as a and one in Mililani. Wow. Hopefully, hopefully another one at the end of this year.
ADRIENNE:
How exciting. You guys have really been growing and clearly it’s because of the need and the community’s support.
ATTILIO:
Yeah. Well, you guys wouldn’t have all this need be expanding all these places, if you guys weren’t growing in the existing places and saying, Hey, we should do this again, over here and over here and over here in this community. So that success speaks to the the happy, healthy patients that you guys keep building to come visit with you all so so speaking of patients, like what kind of age range like should be coming in for this chiropractic care? Yeah.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Yeah, I you know, I like to say if you’ve got a pulse, you can get chiropractic care I you know, I’ve yesterday I treated a six weeks, a six week old and we just infants and babies very different than we did just adults. It’s not turning and twisting and no popping with with infants. But I adjusted my son when he was two days old. It’s one of those things where it’s safe, it’s a good to check. kiddos, especially right after they’re born, there’s a lot of trauma that the head and neck and spine are put through. And just to make sure things are, are okay, and not stuck in a particular position. And the other I think the oldest patient that I’m currently treating is 86. And he’s been receiving regular chiropractic care his entire life and and he is mobile, healthy as an ox. Yeah, he is. He’s a picture of house and and I think part of that reason that he can still walk without assistance and have a good life. Is his increasing mobility from chiropractic care?
ATTILIO:
Well, it’s that that riddle What starts off in life, you know, what walks on four legs, two legs, and three legs, four legs as an infant. Two legs is when you become an adult, and you learn how to walk. And then the three legs is the two legs plus the cane. And oh, yeah, so for our friend, he’s still on his two legs. And we just regular chiropractic visits. I mean, because I am really I do a lot of read a lot of books on health. And what I’m seeing in what the doctors and the medical journals are stating is that we are living longer, but that quality of life towards the end is not as good. And so you guys are there to you know, I guess that 80 something year old is a would be a good testimonial. Because he’s out there still playing pickleball and coming to visit your
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
is true. It is very true. Like I think I might feel that four legs, two legs, three legs.
ATTILIO:
Yeah, it’s gonna keep you on the two legs. Till till you go on to glory. But Adrian, you had a question.
ADRIENNE:
So. So Dr. Scott, I know that some some people have some misconceptions, or they’re like they’re scared about getting adjusted. Let’s do some myth busting. What are these number one complaints or fears that you see people have?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Well, I remember when I was a patient the first time when I was I think it was in high school and I had no idea to what to expect. And the chiropractor at the time God bless him. He didn’t really explain anything that was going on before he did it. And it was it was kind of nerve wracking, especially when he got to the neck. And so I I made it a mission of mine when I became a chiropractor to not let that happen to my patients. So I try and do my best to walk everybody through it make them feel as comfortable as possible. And explain the process of what that adjustment entails. It’s it there is I would say the biggest misconception is that the action movies have, you know, the Steven Seagal type action movies where the neck gets twisted. When the neck adjustment. It does sound loud. Because of the how close the joints are in the neck to the year. Yeah. And so it can be it can echo up into that to that ear and sound a little bit loud, but it’s a very, very fast, very shallow movement. And it’s entirely safe. We make sure we do a couple of tests on the neck before we do the neck just to make sure everything’s okay there. But that is a big misconception is the neck adjustment can cause problems.
ADRIENNE:
And that’s my favorite adjustment. And I think that it’s I think it’s pretty loud like not in my ears. But I think everyone around can also hear it because my neck pops.
ATTILIO:
Hey, check your neck popping to yourself Adrienne.
ADRIENNE:
It’s my favorite though. Like I love it. I feel so much better after I get an adjustment.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
I will attest Adrienne they can hear it in the next room.
ATTILIO:
Well, I mean, do you feel you feel taller and straighter coming out of there?
ADRIENNE:
I do. I feel so much better. Which, by the way, we’re getting adjusted this week. So I’m excited to come back for my next adjust.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Oh,
ATTILIO:
yeah, let’s talk about the regular Joe’s out there and Joanne’s is that we have this sedentary lifestyle where we’re sitting in front of computers, we’re sitting in cars, we have top 10 traffic, worst traffic. You know, there’s there’s, I can see why people would say hey, and then you know, just that not feeling comfortable just leads to irritability, stress, and then it just emanates out from you. I would say why not go get your take care of you know, have good spinal health so that you have a good, better quality of life all the way around? What the, what have you seen as far as the idea of any other examples of people coming in, and it was this way in their lives? And now it’s this way?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Absolutely. I see it every day. Yeah. You know, I’ve got I’ve got some patients, I would say, I treat sciatica quite frequently, that pain that travels down the leg and can uh, you know, get worse when people are sitting for long periods of time. Yes, there’s a version of that, that goes through the neck and into the arm. And that can be pretty debilitating. You know, we use our arms a little bit more than our legs, at most jobs. And so when that’s pretty bad it can. It can be distressful. And I’ve had a couple of patients, one in particular that had a really hard time doing his work with maintenance. He was it was kind of a mechanic and property manager and he couldn’t wear the tool belt, he couldn’t lift his arm. And it took a couple of months. But we got him to a situation where he could get back to moving and had no more numbness and tingling in his arm and no shooting pain down the arm. And he was able to work again. And that, you know, it’s stories like that, that I love to hear. And I love to be a part of making our community a better place.
ATTILIO:
Yeah, awesome.
ADRIENNE:
Well, Dr. Scott, was there anything more that we should have touched on that we haven’t? Because our show is nearing the end?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Sure. I will say you know, movement is medicine, we so often forget about kind of the musculoskeletal style of health care, we focus on our internal medicine a lot, and we should but sometimes we forget about how life affects us. And yeah, how it can put wear and tear on our bodies and, and slow us down. And that’s when the chiropractor that’s when acupuncture, that’s when physical therapy, these conservative forms of healthcare are there for a reason, and they’re really beneficial. Yeah. I, I, it’s, it’s just been such a blessing in my life to see the change in the people that I treat and to meet all of them. And it’s a very, I feel very blessed to have this position in life. But and turning turning point is is a great place for it to be there.
ATTILIO:
Yeah. And I would say you have an excellent bedside manner because it is healthcare that is literally and figuratively hands on. You know, and, and I feel like I was one of those people with the neck thing. I’m like, oh, you know, and then I, you know,
ADRIENNE:
I talked him into it,
ATTILIO:
Because I was, Adrienne’s always doing this stuff. And I’m like, I feel a little bit nervous about this. She’s like, God, just do it. I’m like, Ah, no and stuff. So you were you’re good, excellent bedside manner made me feel more comfortable in that. And and what else Adrienne? Well, I the you mean, the human body was not designed to sit on the couch and watch the entire season of Downton Abbey?
ADRIENNE:
Correct. So I’ve got one last question before we let you go down. Yeah. So I know like you’re married to a chiropractor Yeah, how often do you guys adjust each other?
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
You know, I will say it comes in handy when we were on vacation, travel somewhere in that plane ride, you know, hotel bed takes an extra toll and we can just fix each other. But I would say about once a week, we get adjusted maybe once every other week. So
ATTILIO:
Nice.
ADRIENNE:
Well, that’s good to know. It’s like it’s a nice benefit right of being a chiropractor than being married to a chiropractor. So the tip of his tip for today is if you want good spinal health marry a chiropractor.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
If you can’t do that, go see one.
ATTILIO:
We’ll see you. Next semester.
ADRIENNE:
We go yeah, go see Dr. Scott and his team all over Oahu. Yeah. Yeah. Alrighty. Well, thank you. Thank you so much for being on our show. And we’ll see you soon for our adjustments.
ATTILIO:
Yes.
DR. SCOTT DEANE:
Pleasure. Thank you so much for having me. All right. Thank you, Dr. Scott. Alright, so take care. All right.
ADRIENNE:
Aloha. So you can find that Dr. Scott and his team by going to TI p cairo.com. You could also give them a call at 6372608. But yeah, check them out online. They’ve got a lot of great reviews and just easy easy to navigate websites
