Here’s a bit of our Friday LIVE with Michael Wong.
Today I have Michael Wong with me to discuss the Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Centers and their Laulima Giving Program.
First, I want to share a little information about Michael. He was born and raised here in Hawaii and has three children and five grandchildren. He enjoys doing anything in the ocean, golfing, and supporting UH sports. He graduated with a BS in education and has been a teacher, coach, and athletic director for 20 years, but he has also been a media sales consultant since 1994.
“
The Learning Centers’ passion is to develop the keiki.
”
The Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Centers began in 1976, and the Laulima Giving Program started in 2006. Their purpose is to bring the community together, with many hands, for the good of others. The Learning Centers’ passion is to develop the keiki because they’re our next generation. If we set up the next generation for success, everyone wins.
They began by helping people at Christmastime to ensure every keiki had at least one brand-new toy, but they’ve expanded since then. They ask very generous sponsors in our community for help—not just local businesses but also regular people. Some who used to benefit from the program now enjoy helping others through it. When applications are sent to them from around the state, they reach out to people on that island and see who can help with what people need. They don’t deliver iphones or ipads; they need things that are necessary for people to survive until they’re able to stand on their own again.
They’re not the largest non-profit on the island, but as a Christian, native Hawaiian, non-profit organization, they’ve been blessed to help many people.
